The NSRI Station 2 was started in 1967 and is the oldest station in the country. It also has one of the fastest response times - the time from a call to launch of the boat is aproximately 10 minutes. Back in 1967 crew members had no base and the boat and motors had to be carried down from an old shed to the beach. The motors, steering and fuel lines then had to be attatched before they could be on their way. Now after a recent rebuild, Rescue 2 has one of the best stations in the country.

Station 2 was named John Pattison base in 1996 after Captain John Pattison, operations manager of NSRI who had a personal relationaship with the Bakoven station.

History

The boathouse is situated on the beach at Bakoven, in Camps Bay. The boat is launched through an open channel between the popular Bakoven rocks. Unfortunatley the base has no direct vehicle access so any additional equiptment has to be carried down a flight of stairs. Heavier equiptment has to be airlifted, via helicopter, to the boathouse.

Location

The stations fleet consists of a 6-metre inshore fast responce "Mallards Swift" boat with two 90 horsepower Yamaha outboard engines.
